At the end of the day, the roofing sales industry is really the opportunity for any of us, regardless of our age, background, education, what we have, and where we came from, to absolutely transform our lives.
And when we learn to develop personally — and being likable is one heck of a way to do that — we earn even MORE money, serve even more customers, and live an even better life.
So, I’m going to teach you 3 traits to be more likable. I’m also going to share a couple of bonus tips at the very end.
Before we get started, though, I want to say welcome or welcome back. My name is Adam Bensman, The Roof Strategist. And part of having an amazing experience means that people have to LIKE you. After all, it’s sales 101 that people work with people they know, LIKE, and trust.
Why Likeability Matters in Roofing Sales
This topic was inspired by an experience that Sheena, my wife and partner, had with our dog, Maddie, one of our two rescue dogs.
We were out hiking in the mountains when Maddie tore back her toenail. When that happened, it pulled up the nail all the way up, exposing the nerve — and it’s super painful every time the dog steps on it.
So, Maddie’s running around like a little tripod, and Sheena gets an emergency vet appointment for her. We ended up having to put Maddie under anesthesia to get this whole nail chopped off right at the base. While the dog is under, our veterinarian puts us at ease.
When we get home, Sheena says:
Adam, you wouldn’t believe it. The doctor that worked on Maddie was amazing. He took great care of her. They said she was great.
And then while she was under anesthesia, he went ahead and trimmed her nails, cleaned her teeth, and did all the things that would otherwise require anesthesia.
And I turned to Sheena and said, “I absolutely love our veterinarian. And I trust him inherently.” As Sheena and I kept talking about this, I said:
You know, what? There are three reasons that I absolutely love our vet, Dr. Fish. And I would trust him with anything.
Now, here’s what those three reasons (traits) are.

Roofing Sales Likeability Trait #1: Be Genuine
Be genuine and connect on a human level. What do I mean by that?
- Be genuine: This simply means being authentically yourself and matching your internal experiences with your external expressions. At the vet’s office, Dr. Fish was smiling, clearly showing that he was truly happy doing what he’s doing.
- Connect on a human level: Dr. Fish also connected with us on a human level. He saw how distressed we were about our dog’s pain, and he knew it caused us pain. So, he put us at ease by connecting with us on a human level and being authentically himself.
One disclaimer before we move on. When I say be genuine and be authentically yourself, some people take this to a toxic degree. They are overly obsessed with being authentic, and they express traits that are quite repulsive.

That brings us to the second trait.
Roofing Sales Likeability Trait #2: Care Deeply
Care deeply about what you do. When we were in the veterinarian’s office, Dr. Fish truly cared deeply about:
- Getting the best outcome
- Helping the dog recover as quickly as possible
Now, let’s look at the opposite of that. Think about the last time you went up to a drive thru. The person probably said something like, “Welcome to {whatever fast-food place}. How can I help you?” And they’re just going through the motions. They do NOT care deeply about what they’re doing.
When people feel that you’re just going through the motions like that drive-thru worker, you’re a total Debbie Downer. No one likes a Debbie Downer. And no one wants to be around a Debbie Downer.
On the other hand, when you care deeply about what you do, people FEEL it.
You’ll radiate passion and energy because you care deeply about doing the best job.
Roofing Sales Likeability Trait #3: Try Your Very Best
No matter what, try your very best. When you give it your all, you’ll apply yourself and demonstrate that you truly care. You’ll also:
- Connect
- Do your very best
- Become naturally likeable
- Make it easy for people to trust you with ANYTHING
And when they trust you with anything, you earn their business, and you’ll earn MORE business.
Now, this is not just about making a sale. I want to be crystal clear about that because I don’t want anything on here to be about manipulating people for a favorable outcome.
It’s about being authentically and genuinely you and helping you live an even better life. Because as I’ve said before, roofing sales is really just personal development in disguise.

- Your knowledge and expertise can take you a long way: Let’s go back to the vet, Dr. Fish. He’s been a veterinarian for decades. And you can tell. In fact, when Sheena walked Maddie into the vet’s office, the vet said, “I smell an infection.” That’s how in-tune and knowledgeable he is. He has real expertise. So, remember, people will like you because they know that you know what you’re talking about.
- People like people who feel confident: Confidence puts people at ease. Nervous energy doesn’t. Again, I do what I do because I want to help you build your knowledge and expertise while strengthening your confidence. Because guess what? Expertise and confidence go hand in hand.
