How to Spot the Warning Sign of Self-Sabotage in Roofing Sales

Whether you’re new to roofing sales or you’ve been doing it for a decade, at one point or another, you’ve probably been overwhelmed. It can happen to any of us.

When I get overwhelmed, I know that the little things in life become daunting and overwhelming. That can be things as routine and simple as:

  • Doing laundry
  • Emptying the dishwasher
  • Getting an oil change
  • Scheduling a haircut

All these little odds and ends become a total CHORE.

In fact, it happened to me last week. I was really overwhelmed, both personally and professionally in ways that I’ve never been before.

And it’s a challenging time for me. Time is not on my side.

So, when I get overwhelmed, I find this symptom — and that symptom is RESISTANCE.

This resistance comes in the form of thinking, I really, really, REALLY don’t want to go do this!

Have you ever had that feeling?

I’ve found that even when I’m trying to do something I enjoy:

  • It can be daunting when I feel overwhelmed.
  • The symptom of that is resistance.

In roofing sales, that resistance can arise with thoughts like:

I’d go out and do that, but then I have to load up the truck, load up the trailer, get outside, deal with the cold weather, and do whatever I need to do to make it happen.

That resistance is the symptom of the mistake.

The BIGGEST Mistake & Income Killer in Roofing Sales

So, what’s the most self-sabotaging mistake you can make in door-to-door roofing sales?

It’s letting yourself off the hook and giving yourself a pass.

Example: When I was selling roofs, taking a “pass” meant taking a day or the afternoon off. It usually started with an afternoon, thinking, Hey, I did really well. I had a really great week. That momentum I had built up, and I’m tired now. I’m overwhelmed. I’m working too hard. I’m going to let myself off the hook and take a break.

At first, that break is easy and fulfilling. It feels GOOD, and for a quick minute, I feel recharged.

Then, the next day, I think to myself, Well, what’s one more afternoon of going easy? So, I take that afternoon off too. And that can snowball into thinking:

  • What’s another day?
  • What’s another few hours?
  • What really matters if you push the buck one more time?

If you do:

  1. Your sales momentum just comes to a total HALT.
  2. Your self-discipline comes to a halt too, hitting a wall.
  3. Your earning potential follows suit, coming to a standstill.

That shouldn’t be a surprise if the work and sales aren’t happening. Still, it can be a shock to experience firsthand, and a lot of us go through it. In fact, this is a VERY common thing in high-stress industries, like roofing sales.

So, when you experience this symptom of resistance:

  1. Take it as a silent alarm or red flag that you’re overwhelmed.
  2. Don’t let it kill your momentum, kill your discipline, kill your income.

And the worst part of all this, at least for me, is judging myself. I feel BAD about it, and I:

  • Beat myself up over it
  • Second guess things
  • Generally don’t feel good about myself because I don’t feel like I’m acting in line with my normal levels of discipline.
  • Think to myself, WHAT am I doing?!? I’m off course here!

The First Step to Avoiding Self-Sabotage in Roofing Sales

To get past that resistance and avoid self-sabotage, we need to figure out the easiest way to get started. The good news is that it’s pretty simple.

We just need to put our shoes on.

That’s the first easy step, right? In fact, even if you don’t want to be out there, get started by putting your shoes on. That’s the first easy step to breaking the resistance.

When you’re feeling like, I just do NOT want to do this today, put on your shoes on and acknowledge that resistance in the moment.

Now, this can also apply in other areas of roofing sales too, like when you’re in a neighborhood and you don’t really feel like knocking on doors. When you feel that resistance, just think about putting your shoes on — and then getting in your truck, driving, and getting out to that neighborhood.

It’s that FIRST step that you need to complete to get that momentum, so you can then:

  • Take the next step
  • Open the car door
  • Motivate yourself to get out, knock on doors, and make sales

In fact, I interviewed a roofing sales rep, Carl, who HATED knocking on doors. His technique, which I loved, was to knock on a door where he knew no one was home. That was a way of putting his shoes on to get past that resistance.

Now, your mission is to:

  • Be aware that his resistance.
  • Take one step at a time to push ourselves past it.

When we do this, we can break out of that trap of resistance — and we can recharge, reinvigorate ourselves, and break through those self-sabotaging mistakes that can hold us back in door-to-door roofing sales.

So, put your dang shoes on.
